About Us

Alay Pag-asa maintains its commitment to the holistic care and development of children through a community-linked child-focused program where members and stakeholders actively participate in the program implementation.

Our History

The phenomenon of street children in the Philippines started to gain attention in the early 1980’s. In 2000, there are about 240,000 street children in 22 cities nationwide. In Metro Manila, they are found in parks, busy street intersections and bus terminals. They are engaged in various activities such as: begging; picking pockets and snatching; carwashing/watching/parking; scavenging; selling cigarettes, newspapers, flowers, and even sexual favors. Denied access to basic services and other forms of help that would contribute to their growth and development, they face a very bleak future. Government efforts on this daunting condition are not enough to arrest the situation. If nothing is done, they could further become liabilities in the society. God’s compassion for them is evident in many passages of Scriptures such as Psalm 82:3,4, which says, “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Their only hope is in God. Convinced of this truth and in obedience to God’s command, a group of committed evangelical Christians who have worked extensively among street children and their families organized Alay Pag-asa Christian Foundation on April 28, 1990. As a non-stock, non-profit mission organization, its main purpose is to assist street children and their families to know Christ personally in their lives and enable them to become spiritually strong, economically productive and responsible members of our society.
